Miasmas refined by the proper route are too expensive, because a large number of sophisticated instruments and specialists are required to operate the process. These instruments and experts were controlled by aristocrats and merchants, and the common people had little access to them. However, in order to obtain high profits, some people choose to take a different approach, trying to refine the miasma operation with crude homemade equipment.

A wandering boy picked up an unconscious man in the garbage one day. Out of the kindness of his heart, he took him out of the miasma area, but it wasn't long before they were hunted down several times. This is because men used to be upper-class researchers, but because they learned a dirty secret, the aristocrats targeted. He escaped with materials that would have shaken the status of the nobility.
